Abstract

This article shows the position of the author about the dilemma in language teaching of what is primary: the teaching of communicative skills or the knowledge of the language system. Some concepts are clarified and lead to the nec essity to conceive a language teaching - learning process that takes into account what constitute appropriate (pragmatic) as well as correct language behavior (activity) in the teaching of both the mother tongue and the foreign languages.
