Trends in the development of professional advancement in the tourism sector in Cuba

Abstract
The preparation of human capital in tourism is a critical element in the competitiveness of destinations, but professional improvement in the Cuban context presents limitations in its management and results. Therefore, it is necessary to delve into its regularities and trends to base its improvement. With the aim of analyzing the historical trends in the development of professional improvement in tourism in Cuba, it employed theoretical methods such as analysis and synthesis, induction-deduction, historical-logical analysis, systemic approach, and systematization, along with documentary review as an empirical technique. Two indicators were established for the analysis, viewed within the context of the political and socioeconomic conditions that have accompanied the development of tourism. It identified three stages in the evolution of professional improvement in tourism: the first from 1980 to 1995, the second from 1996 to 2015, and the third from 2016 to the present, with tendencies to respond to the demands arising from tourism development policies and the implementation of programs that address the specific characteristics of territories and businesses. It concluded that professional improvement in tourism has developed from a pedagogical perspective, drawing on the best of Cuba's educational heritage and on scientific findings in the field of pedagogy and educational sciences both in Cuba and abroad; however, it exhibits a top-down implementation and a predominance of the offerings of academic centers, which necessitates its improvement.
